web·mas·ter
/ˈwebˌmastər/

noun

the person who maintains a particular website.

answering these 100 questions for webmasters by MOUSEcky of mouseling.net!

warning i suppose, my answers will probably annoy people that are actually literate in html and css.

1. Please introduce yourself.
i'm meel!! i'm a cinephile and general literary enthusiast. i also draw pictures, make music, and smile at strangers.
2. How long have you been making websites?
5 years! Since October 2020 to be specific.
3. And what got you into the hobby?
an artist i liked had a website and i thought it was the coolest thing ever. so of course i wanted to make one too.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
i'm not picky whatsoever, i like any site that has things to read on it. i especially love webshrines and writings dedicated to something the webmaster deeply loves. people that are in love with a certain topic/thing write about it in such a way that you can feel as excited as they are about it.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
i plan things sort of thoroughly, like i make mock-up designs of what i want a page's layout to look like but things usually change a bit when i'm actually writing it in html.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
them (the artist mentioned in question 3) and it. (my friend that inspires me with it's elegant writing style and unique page designs using little to no graphics)
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
writing the content of each page!
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
...writing the content of each page.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
sort of half and half, but even so i'd say they mostly have the same layout. im allergic to making anything thats not a really long skinny div.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
im getting better with it, so i'd say i'm slowly approaching light confidence.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
no dawg, i don't know how to correctly use anything whatsoever. i be using lists and tables and the float element for everything instead of learning the correct alternatives. its a bad habit...
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
i hate all of them
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Write the text contents!
14. Do you know JavaScript?
not yet!
15. How about PHP?
no, doesn't interest me.
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
i try to keep everything sort of dark but otherwise not really.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
content!! i can't design anything well to save my life so i don't put much effort into it anymore.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
i don't but maybe someday! i like having the neocities name attached to my website but i really want a .party domain too...
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
sick! just like any other website, i'll probably like it if there's interesting things to read.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
no but i do check it sometimes. i don't particularly care about it being valid if it works as intended and is flexible for other devices but sometimes i try to fix it up so no one points and laughs at my code
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
LOVE THEM i always gotta stop myself from overusing them.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
i get intimidated by really big ones. it's too much and also there's no way the owner of said wall has actually looked through all one million sites they have linked. small walls are ideal.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
similar! i'd just make this website again but with better code.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
yesh... everyone is so good at writing eloquently and designing layouts, it makes me so jelly....
25. What text editor do you use?
VSCodium
26. Why do you use that one?
i had enough of using the neocities code editor and a friend recommended VSCodium.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
on my server of course! well for the most part. this does not apply to my art gallery currently but i will change that soon, i'm just lazy.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
i shouldn't answer this
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
too much. maybe like 30mb (37.1mb. i was close)
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
yes i have my site saved on two different devices at all times
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
no real preference, both can be done well or terribly.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
i use lots of greys and white. i don't really do it on purpose, it's just what i find easiest on the eyes.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
NEVER!
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
a couple yes! but these days there's only a few i actually talk about websites with.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
some do, mostly just my friends that share similar hobbies with me.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
sort of often. these days its usually about once or twice a month, not including any small nitpicking like changing an image or the way something is worded.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
not much because i think it looks acceptable.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
hobby focused!
39. Do you do web design professionally?
nope
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
hell no. i'm currently unemployed but i'm looking for work in urban agriculture or gardening.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
no. emails (in my eyes) are usually only for 'professional'/'formal' converations, and i don't have much of a reason to reach out to others like that. one of my friends really likes emailing casually but i am bad at it and emails make me talk like a fake person, so we don't do that.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
yes i have tumblr and instagram! tumblr is for interacting with other fans of my favorite things. instagram is for sharing wips and watching videos my friends send me.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
yes just discord, all my friends are there. is it just me or do people not text normally anymore..?
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
yes! anything on my music page. lately though i've been listening to this album in particular. the album art is suggestive! don't open it in front of your morally conservative grandma or something.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
one website!
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
many. this website is just me yapping about everything i like.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
i don't know. i suppose i'm trying to be authentic but its not like this website is an accurate representation of how i talk in real, private situations. maybe a little bit of both? i definitely try to sound more put together and intelligent here then i actually am but i'm not trying to be perceived as a completely different person. like yes i am presenting my real mind and thoughts but it's filtered for sharing to the public.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
because of my website? i wouldn't say that. i've made friends thanks to being in the personal website space but i don't think it's because of my site.
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
yeah its fine.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
none really. people can do whatever they want, i don't care. if i don't like it i won't look at it.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
people should be more crazy about pushing html to it's limit.
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
i use mostly generic structure and feel no guilt about it. i've been meaning to switch things to be semantic for accessibility purposes, but i'm not sure when i'll get to that. soon, probably?
53. Do you consider different browsers?
yes of course! i try not to use any elements that don't work on all browsers.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
firefox. it sucks a bit less then most other browsers.
55. And what OS are you on?
Windows.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
i just happen to use it. i don't have my own computer, the one i use is shared between everyone i live with so it's not like i have much of a choice.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
Well it's not mobile hostile..
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
with a warning beforehand its okay. i sincerely apologize to anyone who viewed my website in 2021-2023, i overused autoplay everywhere so bad.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
they're cute but it's not my cup of tea. if something happens to even one site in the ring, it often breaks the whole thing, which is a huge turn off.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
yeas..... currently i only have two up but i've made more in the past. it's literally my favorite thing to do. in other people's web shrines, i love hearing about the webmaster's connections to the topic of their shrine, like what it means to them and all the little details that they want more people to know. show me your soul!!!
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
yeah, i'm probably as basic as they get in the genre of 'personal website run by an artist.'
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
i don't have an ideal. that's sort of like asking what my ideal drawing is. its a medium, i can't bring myself to constrain it to one perfect vision. i'm striving to make something that represents me well and that i can be proud of.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
i am! most of them yes but not all. many are edited/collages of images made by others or free to use graphics.
64. What are your favorite resource sites?
spriters resource. i also have some more linked on my bookmarks page.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
Writing articles to put up here and never doing it because they're not perfect to me :(
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
BE YOURSELF! do not listen to sticklers and pretentious people about what makes and doesn't make a 'good website.' Like learning any new skill, you may suck at first and that's fine. It's just a bit harder to suck when it comes to website building because we have a lot of people in the space on their high horse punching down at obvious beginners. Ignore all of that, make whatever you want to and you'll eventually find your style and voice.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
i try to keep most of it in css but sometimes if a page has something unique to it in the style ill hard code it.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
i don't believe i've ever ran into a site with this kind of layout! even so as long as it doesn't explode people's computers upon opening it, i don't care. do whatever you want
69. How about table-based layouts?
that's my site currently lmao. people can do whatever they want i don't care, but i don't like it for my site right now so i'm likely going to change it soon.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
sorry i've said this twice in a row already but if it works for someone's site then cool, i don't care. i am very tempted to switch over to this kind of layout honestly!
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
html. i spend a very long time making and fixxing it.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
oh boy did i. i used to hard code ALL of my styling on all pages until very recently. like within the past year recent. its because for a while editing css didn't do anything, like if i altered it, it just wouldn't register or refresh so it was useless. i don't know why it was like that for so long but it isn't anymore so i no longer have to do that lol. i assume it was something with my browser's cache, but it was weird cus clearing the cache didn't work ever until one day it did.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
no, i only make them if i need one.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
intermediate maybe. i've been at this for five years but i truthfully don't know a lot about html besides what i choose to learn. there are probably super obvious rules or elements that everyone uses but i don't just because i've never made anything where i absolutely needed it or that it applied to, if that makes sense.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
not anymore unless i'm curious on how someone did something.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
studying other people's code
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
yes this is me and my elements

78. Thoughts on floating elements?
my fave, i use them so much.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
px or % depending on what i'm sizing
80. Do you have a favourite font?
no but i have a particular liking to pixelated versions of common fonts.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
maybe, if we were working on a project or something. we could plan pages together.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
not much anymore, i'm not good at keeping up with anything outside of the small handful of websites i semi-regularly visit.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
no, i forget my bookmarks are there half the time. honestly my bookmarks are mostly for websites that i know i would lose/forget the name of otherwise. i will remember the names of other people's personal websites so bookmarking isn't needed :) if someone bookmarked mine though i'd feel happy and say yayyy
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
my opinions and thoughts on the things i write about, which no one is impressed with right now because there isn't that much of it here right now. but soon..
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
yes! i am not very tech literate but i would like to be. whenever i have the money, time, and space i'd like to build my own computer. i don't collect anything currently.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
too long. these days i spend all my time reading, drawing, looking for jobs, and talking to friends. All things that i'm usually doing at a computer so yeah, way too long.
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
anyone who's interested in what i'm sharing.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
no, i'd die
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
no, i'd like to learn someday though.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
never used one, generally don't care about them either.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
no. i don't need to know how many people have visited. the guestbook is more than enough for me.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
sometimes i read forum threads but i don't post on anything for basically the same reason i don't talk to people through email. too formal and it's not like there's anything formal i'd wanna talk about on a public forum.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
mix of directly into the editor and text documents.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
people have told me that i'm cool so yeah i probably appear cool to some people. without the confirmation of others though i'd probably assume i appear like a clown. fuckass basic broken website run by a guy that can barely code.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
YES I'M VERY EMBARRASSED but i've never like. purged everything at once. i delete things slowly as i come to find they don't represent my current self. i take little to no care in trying to separate myself from anything old i've made though, you can probably find EXTREMELY old stuff (mostly art) if you're a dedicated enough stalker. which in that case i pity you because i am not a very interesting person to stalk.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
unless i had a real reason to close it down, no. i'd leave it up. if possible i'd want this site to stay around for a bit after i die in fact. at least let me live on in the wayback machine!
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
i try not to reveal too much about myself but i love to talk. still i suppose it's not like i'm super out there revealing everything about myself. so maybe i'm sort of in the middle.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
i can't choose one friend to be labelled the best like that. i have a small handful of online friends i'd consider to be the 'best,' which to me just means the closest. some of them do have websites. you can find them linked somewhere if you look hard enough.
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
yes, in fact i feel sometimes i over optimize. not everything needs to be a jpeg or under 400px but i can't help it.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
happy! it was fun! thank you MOUSEcky for the fun questions :3
make sure to read MOUSEcky's answers to the questions! and maybe even fill them out yourself!
